Religious School Parent Bulletin February 7, 2014

Friendly reminders:
All Religious School parents are invited to meet with the chairs of the Cantor/Educator Search Committee this Sunday at 9:00am in the Library.

Get creative … and be colorful! All students and their families are invited to participate in FREE art projects on Sunday, Feb. 16 as part of the “Festival of Israeli Art Show & Sale.” Local artist Julie Stein will guide everyone through three stations: Making a small clay pot, painting on canvas using acrylic paints, and decorating a picture frame. Join us at 9:30am and/or 12:30pm. All ages welcome and it’s all free. Parents: Come see the Art Show! Over 1500 works of art by more than 100 known and upcoming Israeli artists will be on display by Safrai Gallery of Israel. Show proceeds will benefit CAI’s youth and education programs!

TEACHERS' CLASSROOM RECAPS:
Kindergarten and 1st Grade – Renee Hulsey
We had a lot of fun in Religious School this week! The kindergarten class learned the letter “nun” and the first graders learned “Alef” and “Vav.” The highlight was learning about tefillin. Devin helped us learn how to wrap it! Don’t forget your tzedakah!

2nd Grade – Bryan Gordon
We've got our learning caps on! Second grade has begun learning the Purim story during Hebrew study, and practicing feminine/masculine and singular/plural forms through fun games.

3rd Grade – Laura Olesen
We had a wonderful week at Religous school! We have finished our chapter on Joshua and the battle of Jericho and will do our reenactment on Sunday. In Hebrew, we've been studying our brachot (blessings) for holidays and "Mah Nishtana." They are doing a great job preparing for the Siddur Dedication, and I encourage you to have the students continue to practice their solos as much as possible.

4th Grade – Elana Israel
The 4th grade is doing great! In Judaics, we started talking about the history of Sephardim, as well as their present day traditions. In Hebrew, we began working with letters “Vet” and “Vav,” as well as continuing to work with the silent vowel “Shva.” It has been hard work, but the students are progressing in an amazing way!

5th Grade – Courtney DeYoung & Sarah Artzi
In Hebrew, we have been working on writing script and improving our reading skills. On Sunday we began a new packet of script letters which will occasionally be sent home. On Tuesday we worked on reading. The students practiced reading as pairs and then worked together as a group. The students will also be sent home with reading packets that we highly encourage to be practiced (perhaps with the help of a parent).

6th Grade – MeMe Aguila
The students had a wonderful opportunity this Sunday to participate in the World Wide Wrap with the Men’s Club. They learned about teffilin and had an opportunity to put them on. Thank you to the Men's Club for giving us the opportunity! In Hebrew, we continue to develop our conversational techniques and build on our vocabulary. This week, a word search went home; it contained Hebrew words to be located in the English word search. I hope you have fun doing it together with your child.

7th – 8th Grade – Sivan Shahmoon
This past week we had a lesson about Elie Wiesel and the Holocaust, and what it means to be a witness. The students have been teaching part of the classes, which has been great.
