“The Wisdom of Jewish Tucson” – Feb. 1, 8 & 15, 2017

4th Annual “The Wisdom of Jewish Tucson”
Wednesdays, Feb. 1, 8 & 15, 2017
7:00 – 9:00pm

This annual adult education series provides an opportunity to share what we know, what we need to know, and about our passions and areas of interest from a personal and/or professional perspective. Each week offers a different keynote speaker, Q & A, refreshments and socializing.

This year’s theme: “Religion AND Science… or Religion OR Science?” with keynote speakers:

Feb. 1 – Dr. Hester Oberman, UA Dept. of Religious Studies & Classics presents, Scientific Facts vs. Spiritual Values”
The struggle to bridge scientific facts and spiritual values has long been an issue. Today, we still haven’t solved this riddle as we aspire to a more complete understanding of nature that leaves room for the mental and subjective, especially the religious.

Feb. 8 – Dr. Thomas Fleming, UA Dept. of Astronomy, Steward Observatory presents, “The Cosmos is Not Enough: Adventures of a Catholic Boy in the World of Astronomy”
Fleming will share his experiences and insights as a Catholic working in the field of astronomy and his attempts to reconcile his faith with the philosophy of his job. Considering the types of issues addressed in the field, astronomy can be thought of as one of the more philosophical sciences.

Feb. 15 – Dr. Richard Green, UA Assistant Director for Government Relations, Steward Observatory presents, “Cosmology and Jewish Thought”
Scientific observation describes a Universe that started at a single moment with a big bang. The Jewish view of a Creator of the physical Universe for the purpose of understanding Divine will and of existence is not violated by today’s scientific description. While science addresses how things work, only religious thought attempts to answer “why.”

3-week series: $18 per person PLUS food donation for the Community Food Bank. Reservations required by Jan. 30.
