“The Wisdom of Jewish Tucson” – Feb. 7, 14 & 21, 2018

5th Annual “The Wisdom of Jewish Tucson”
Wednesdays, Feb. 7, 14 & 21, 2018
7:00 – 9:00pm

This adult education series provides an opportunity to share what we know, what we need to know, and about our passions and areas of interest from a personal and/or professional perspective. Each week offers a different keynote speaker, Q & A, refreshments and socializing. This year’s theme: “The Ethics of Medicine” with keynote speakers:

Feb. 7 • Dr. Barry Friedman presents, Health Care in America: A Physician’s Perspective
Now retired, Friedman had a solo private practice for 20 years specializing in internal medicine. At the same time, he served as chair of the Pharmacy Committee and chair of the Infection Control Committee at Tucson Medical Center. During his entire practice, he also taught residents and interns, and held monthly conferences on the business of medicine.

Feb. 14 • Stephanie Roberts presents, “Biopharmaceuticals: At What Cost?
Roberts is a Corporate Account Director at Acorda Therapeutics; a small biopharmaceutical company specializing in therapies that make a difference in the lives of people with neurological disorders. In an attempt to both defend her industry's exorbitant pricing and to explain it, Roberts will give an overview of how medications are brought to market and how both prescriptions and dollars move through the system. She will also share resources that exist to assist people in affording their prescriptions.

Feb. 21 • Dr. Howard Schwartz presents, “Limited Resources, Infinite Needs: A Jewish Medical Response”
After retiring from a medical career involving research, teaching and patient care, Schwartz found that moving to Tucson allowed him an even deeper involvement in a lifelong commitment to Torah study. An aspect of special interest to him is the issue of how western social and cultural attitudes regarding health care intersect with Jewish thinking, thus impacting how the Jewish physician deals with such issues, for both Jewish and non-Jewish patients.

3-week series: $18 per person PLUS donation for the Community Food Bank. RSVP needed by Feb. 5.
