Monday, February 12

  • Parent-Tot Class, 9:00 – 11:00am
    Open to the public, this FREE weekly class for children up to 24-months in age and their parent(s) is a great way to meet other parents, exchange experiences, and provide an opportunity for the children to play together and engage in age-appropriate activities. We also read a book from PJ Library twice a month. Facilitated by Amanda Stark, various experts from different fields of child development and child-care will visit occasionally to share their expertise and provide opportunities for discussions.     The Talmud is an extensive compilation of teachings and opinions of thousands of rabbis over the centuries, covering matters of Jewish law, ethics, philosophy, history, customs, and more. We are currently studying Tractate Megillah. Learn about the law and lore in the Talmud with Rabbi Robert Eisen as we dig deep into living Judaism. Open to all. No charge to attend.

Wednesday, February 14

  • “Gentle Chair Yoga” – Wednesdays, 9:30–10:30am
    Focus is on increased balance, strength and flexibility in a supportive group setting. Meditation and deep relaxation at end of each class leaves participants with positive healing energy and uplifted spirits. Dress comfortably.   • 5th Annual “The Wisdom of Jewish Tucson,” continuing Wednesdays, Feb. 14 & 21, 7:00 – 9:00pm
    This adult education series provides an opportunity to share what we know, what we need to know, and about our passions and areas of interest from a personal and/or professional perspective. Each week offers a different keynote speaker, Q & A, refreshments and socializing. This year’s theme: “The Ethics of Medicine” with keynote speaker:
    Feb. 14 • Stephanie Roberts presents, “Biopharmaceuticals: At What Cost?
    Roberts is a Corporate Account Director at Acorda Therapeutics; a small biopharmaceutical company specializing in therapies that make a difference in the lives of people with neurological disorders. In an attempt to both defend her industry's exorbitant pricing and to explain it, Roberts will give an overview of how medications are brought to market and how both prescriptions and dollars move through the system. She will also share resources that exist to assist people in affording their prescriptions.
    Feb. 21 • Dr. Howard Schwartz presents, “Limited Resources, Infinite Needs: A Jewish Medical Response”
    After retiring from a medical career involving research, teaching and patient care, Schwartz found that moving to Tucson allowed him an even deeper involvement in a lifelong commitment to Torah study. An aspect of special interest to him is the issue of how western social and cultural attitudes regarding health care intersect with Jewish thinking, thus impacting how the Jewish physician deals with such issues, for both Jewish and non-Jewish patients.

  • Targum Shlishi, approx. 12pm following Kiddush
    We are taught to read the Torah Portion of the week, each week, twice: In/From the Torah text (Shnayim Mikra), and again in translation (Targum Shlishi) to ensure that we understand both the form and the function of Torah – what it teaches, and how it can be applied. Today’s topic: “The Ethics of Intellectual Property.” No charge to attend.
  • Shabbat Afternoon Torah Study, 4:15pm
    Open to all, this is an opportunity to become more involved in “living Judaism.” Lay-led. No charge to attend. Torah portion: Terumah

    Men’s Club will join the 4th, 5th and 6th Graders in Religious School to show them how to wrap tefillin in conjunction with the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs’ annual “World Wide Wrap.” As a culmination of their shema unit, students will present their own symbols of their relationship with God.     This group meets to discuss relevant topics around Jewish parenting and joins with other families to participate in synagogue life to build a vibrant and organic community among young families around the synagogue and to help shape your child’s Jewish experience. For more information, contact Rabbi Barkan.

  • 2nd Annual Hamentaschen for Hunger, 3:30pm (Kadima to attend in lieu of lounge at noon.)
    Designed to satisfy both the body and the soul! Individuals or families make their own hamentaschen (take & bake). A set-up of dough (enough to make about 12 hamentaschen), rolling pins, cutters, fillings, a disposable baking pan and instructions are provided. Materials also available to decorate Shalach Manot bags and Purim greeting cards. “Set-ups” are $18 each; attendees may purchase more than one set-up. Event co-sponsored by Concepts Event Planning & Decorating. Proceeds will be divided between the Tucson Community Food Bank, LEKET (the national food bank of Israel) and CAI’s Youth Programs.
